Integrating Digital Denture Technology into a Prosthetic Techniques Curriculum in a Resource-Constrained Institution

Abstract

Objectives
This study evaluated the integration of a CAD/CAM digital denture set-up exercise as an adjunct to a preclinical prosthetic techniques course for second-year undergraduate dental students at a South African dental school. It further explored students’ perceptions of the technology and dental technicians’ views on its influence on student learning and performance.


Methods


This research followed a mixed methods paradigm. For the quantitative component of the study, all students who completed the preclinical prosthetic course in 2021 (n = 77 students) were included. An online questionnaire was used to assess students’ perspectives on the implementation of the CAD/CAM exercise prior to the manual preclinical procedures.


For the qualitative component of the study, a focus group interview was held with the four dental technicians responsible for preclinical training. The session was facilitated by an independent dental educator with expertise in qualitative research. An interview protocol guided the discussion, with questions exploring their perspectives on exposure to CAD/CAM technology and its effect on student performance in the preclinical course.


Results
Students reported generally positive perceptions of the CAD/CAM platform, describing it as intuitive and helpful for understanding tooth arrangement. The software supported self-assessment, independent learning, and increased confidence for future clinical practice. However, some students experienced challenges with digital tooth arrangement and perceived the exercise as an additional workload. Dental technicians recognised the educational value of the technology but noted limitations related to technical issues, time constraints, and limited staff experience with the software.


Conclusion
CAD/CAM technology can serve as a valuable supplementary tool in preclinical prosthodontic education. Careful curriculum integration and adequate training are required to maximise its benefits, particularly in resource-constrained educational settings.
